About Aberdare
Located in the heart of the Welsh valleys, Aberdare is gateway to the beautiful Brecon Beacons. The area is linked irrevocably with South Wales’ industrial past as until the closures of the mines in the 1980's, there was huge industry in the form of coke smelting and coal mining. Tower colliery, one of the few remaining open cast mines in South Wales, still runs nearby. Not only is the method of mining unusual at Tower, the management of the mine is also of interest; it reopened in 1995, when it was bought out by the men who worked the colliery prior to nationalisation.
